A conflict-free diamond is grown and distributed without any links to rebel or terrorist groups. To maintain ethical standards in the diamond industry, various procedures and agreements, such as the Kimberley Process Certification, have been established. This process aims to prevent the trade of diamonds that finance violence, ensuring that all diamonds are sourced responsibly and ethically.
Diamonds that do not comply with these strict practices are commonly known as blood diamonds or conflict diamonds. These diamonds typically come from regions affected by civil unrest or war and are often traded illegally. At Halo Diamonds, we are deeply committed to ensuring that all our diamonds are conflict-free. We take this issue seriously and implement necessary measures to comply with the Kimberley Process. Our adherence to these stringent regulations demonstrates our dedication to promoting transparency and ethical practices in the diamond industry, allowing our customers to purchase diamonds with confidence and peace of mind.
The Kimberley Process
The Kimberley Process (KP) was established in May 2000 when diamond-producing countries in Southern Africa convened in Kimberley, South Africa. The purpose of this meeting was to explore methods to stop the trade of conflict diamonds and ensure that diamond purchases do not fund violence by rebel groups and their allies, who aim to undermine legitimate governments.
Under the Kimberley Process, any country that participates in the agreement must provide a certificate that clearly states the origin of the rough diamonds. To obtain this certificate, the country of origin must confirm that the income derived from the diamonds does not support warlords or contribute to conflict financing in any way.
The Kimberley Process is open to all countries that are willing and able to implement its requirements. The KP has 54 participants, representing 81 countries, with the European Union and its member states counted as a single participant. KP members account for approximately 99.8% of the global production of rough diamonds. In addition, the World Diamond Council, representing the international diamond industry, and civil society organizations, such as Partnership Africa Canada, participate in the KP and have played a significant role since its inception.
